(In English: “Welcome to the Sticks” by Dany Boon, 2008)

Just a brilliant linguo-cultural comedy. “Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis” (“Welcome to the Sticks”, France — 2008) is about a guy who is punished for his inappropriate tricks while managing a post office in the South of France.

His superiors decide to punish him: they do promote him to his desired post of a director, but… they send him to the North of France, to Picardy. In southerners’ imagination it is somewhere so close to the Arctic.

However, our guy very soon finds out that it is one of the most hospitable places he’d ever been to.

A stranger who arrives in our land, usually cries twice: first, when he arrives, and second, when he has to leave.

Watch and see whether this Picardian adage is true.

The film also popularizes Picardian, a language very close to French, spoken in the North of France, as well as the culture of this region.

French original: Les chansons d’amour par Christophe Honoré, 2007

French original: Les chansons d’amour par Christophe Honoré, 2007
(In English: Love songs by Christophe Honoré, 2007)

A really mysterious scene from “Les Chansons d’amour”.

Erwann meets his friend in the early morning, and they are on their way to school.

-As-tu fais ton anglais?

(Have you done your English? – No, but I did some Aragon.)

And he is reciting a poem to Erwann. Even if I misheard and it’s not Aragon, the thing is that the text can’t be found even as the quote from the movie.

Those who restrain desire, do so because theirs is weak enough to be restrained. And the Restrainer, or Reason, usurps its place and governs the unwilling.

French original: “8 femmes” par François Ozon, 2002

French original: “8 femmes” par François Ozon, 2002
(In English: “Eight Women” by François Ozon, 2002)

I am awfully sorry, but these 67 seconds are my most favourite movie scene ever. Catherine Deneuve, Fanny Ardant and Isabelle Huppert are at their best here, in François Ozon’s “Eight Women”.

-But Mom… what are you doing?
-Oh nothing, we’ve been quarrelling with Pierrette.
-That’s not what you think.
-Oh no no, we don’t think. We see.

Russian original: Б.Р.

Russian original: Б.Р.
(In English: B. Vipper “Art of Ancient Greece”)

I am in the process of designing a brief intro to the history of art upon one request.

Going over Ancient Greece and its art led me back to the classical work by B. Vipper.

All of a sudden I thought that had he come these days, he would have been one of the best bloggers talking about his profession: to be able to write about such a boring thing as Greek Protogeometric period requires a huge amount of talent.

Moonsorrow

https://youtu.be/icBU0IpO46k10:01Have the most energetic morning with my recent discovery: hard- and black-metal rock band from Finland, Moonsorrow.

This track is almost 14 mins long, but its worth its time: symphonic metal rock with most impressive vocal parts.

They sing in Finnish, btw, despite their English name.

Caliban

Did you know that hard rock was first mentioned in Shakespeare’s Tempest?

Caliban.
For I am all the subjects that you have,
Which first was mine own king: and here you sty me
In this hard rock, whiles you do keep from me
The rest o’ the island.

Dungen

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgIdJrMoFCE22:20And you know what happened shortly after I published my review of Kent? I was sent one more marvelous name — Dungen.

Their sound is much more experimental, and I queued all of their publicly available albums ahead of this night’s intense work.

Besides that, a lot of fantastic tracks, purely instrumental.
